Darlington Harriers Mile Night – Organising an Event

Mile Night @mile_night is a Darlington Harriers @Dharriers organised event at Stadium 2000 in Shildon on Friday 2nd August. Club chairman Mark Tallon tells us more about about what goes on behind the scenes.

“The event, like all officially organised track and field events, has a UK Athletics permit.  Permit OUT 19/067 (Outdoor season 2019 number 67) was accredited to Mile Night by the UK Athletics Licensing Office after Darlington Harriers satisfied a number of conditions set out in the application.

Different levels of track and field events require different standards to be met.  UKA has three levels of event permit. Level 1 includes local open events, Level 2 includes area championships and then Major Level includes televised events. As a local open meeting, Mile Night has been accredited as Level 1.

While checking an application, UKA will check their records that the track is certified, and that the organiser has arranged for enough officials to cover the event.  Officials are also accredited from Level 1 – ‘Newly Qualified’ to Level 4 – ‘International Standard’.  The number of officials required and the corresponding qualification level of the officials is of course more stringent the higher the level of the competition.

On top of the venue and officials being up to the required standard, when submitting an application, event organisers are guaranteeing that they will run the event according to UKA rules, making results eligible for Power of 10, that they will run a safe event and complete the required risk assessments.  In return, the license provides the organiser with £5m public liability insurance.

The final step is to raise enough interest locally to make the event a success. This is largely done through social media, word of mouth and the support of other local running clubs and their members. As a club we organise many races and charity events each year, always receiving terrific support in terms of volunteers, participants and local coverage”
